The Contact Lens! Best Invention Since Sliced Bread

As the development of the first contact lens came about in the 1950's, people who needed correction eye wear never thought that technology and the creation of the first soft lens would be the beginning of visual freedom for America and the world!

Imagine the days when you had no choices, and all that was available were framed eyeglasses. Now some people still prefer this option, but it's nice to know that technology has provided people who don't like to wear glasses the freedom of expression with a variety of lens options. The turning point for contact lenses was back in the 90's when the FDA approved the use of the cosmetic version of soft lenses, and also daily disposable contacts were introduced, which caused the lens vision market to change significantly!

What a great invention, and we are sure to mention that people who lived through the 70's, 80's, and 90's were excited with the introduction of contacts and the variety of options available today! Some may agree that vision wear may be a mandatory element in their lives due to their current eye condition, but for whatever reason, they don't enjoy wearing them. There may be physical, and possibly social issues that individuals go through wearing glasses. With the introduction of disposable lens products, finally those who had no options at one time in their life, are truly happy to say they do now!

Technology today in lens care provides a wide variety of disposable contacts, and gas permeable lenses. You can easily find a toric bifocal, daily disposable lens and for the person looking to add a little change in their look, some great color prescription and cosmetic lenses. The days are gone when glasses are the only choice you have, and with the array of vision products online, and the ability to have these options available at our fingertips is what makes this world so remarkable!

Optometrist and natural treasure for eyesight improvement

When was your last time visit to your optometrist? Did they ever suggest to you to go for non-orthodox eyesight treatment? I wonder if they ever learn about holistic treatment for eyesight improvement beside the orthodox ways as what their practice.
Well, I guess it is not that they did not aware or not even study it back in college but that what business is about, right?

To suggest or introduce you with the easiest and the safest methods to improve your eyesight naturally will be the issue as this method basically will be the most last to be endorsed by most optometrist. Naturally way by exercise actually trains the inner muscles of your eyes to strengthen and as a result improve your eyesight.
If they advice you for a natural improvement course or programme, then how would you proceed to go for their product. The spectacles, the contact lenses or the laser eye surgery (Lasik surgery).

Honestly as I can conclude, compare to orthodox and non-orthodox eyesight improvement, I do believe that, there will be an obvious different in a matter of financial cost. For non-orthodox, most of the course or programme will cost you less then what you paid for the orthodox method.

In the question of time, it is well known that spectacles and contact lenses is a super fast solution for long or short-sighted problem. You just need to go for about half and hour eye examination and your optometrist will provide you your eye vision degree (point score) prescription to make your spectacles. Some event thinks that it is a fashion trend or might be being considered as an intellectual person. Hurmmmmm......is it?

Similar situation goes to contact lenses application. Both would not cost you a lot of time to experience the result compare to laser surgery which cost you maybe a few days and if you choose to try the holistic (non-orthodox) eyesight improvement , it basically will cost you longer time compare to what method discuss above.

So, the orthodox method is fantastic right. But ever wonder that you will repeat this scenario again for a greater degree of your myopia or hyperopic and you end up with more thick spectacles to wear which cost you more money to pay and healthier eye. Oppppssssssssss!!!!!. What? A healthier eye? I have doubt about that.

Anyway, if you choose to try the holistic eyesight improvement, in my humble and honest opinion, I would say that it will cost you more time to achieve the level where you would not need to wear your spectacles or as prevention to those whom start experiencing myopia or hyperopic situation. It even depends to individual body condition. And what most boring is, it requires a great discipline as what the proverb say. “Practice make perfect”, and this is a challenge to those who undergo a hectic lifestyle due to carrier and etc. BUT (here come the magic word - but – as it can reverse the bad to good and good to bad judgement understanding. hahahahah) I think, one can always find a little time to applied at least one of the method thought in the holistic eyesight improvement course. Even just for about 5 minute to 10 minute a day, with a consistent courage you will programme yourselves to achieve a level you wish. As what Bob Doyle say,

“Most of us attract by default. We just think that we don’t have any control over it. Our thoughts and feelings are on autopilot, and so everything is brought to us by default”

There, we don’t know the power if we don’t start it first. So let us see what you will be benefited if you success in applying the holistic eyesight treatment.

Basically you don’t need to wear your spectacles anymore. Therefore you don’t have to worry you might forgetting where you put your spectacles and without spectacles you can join more type of sport, you don’t have to clean it anymore, avoiding it from broken risk or to update it with new one as your eye degree scale increase or just to adapt with the latest trend (fashion). Among the best part when you not wearing a spectacles is when you go for a 3D cinema. It is easy to wear the 3D spectacles as you need not to wear it together with your own spectacles. How about when you planning for scuba diving?

More less with contact lenses practice, one can avoiding the risk of the dry eye symptom and what more interesting is, no more the routine of taking out and in the lenses for daily, weekly or monthly based use.

Do remember that, if we achieve the level of good eyesight without wearing glasses, contact lenses, undergo laser treatment, but by natural method exercise or method, you gain more on the part of your healthiness. A more relaxing and focus mind. This will be very helpful for those who studying level or for your children or parents. Come share with me more about the benefit of not wearing spectacles. Click here to visit holistic eyesight treatment programme.

An ophthalmic exam

An ophthalmic exam is a series of tests done to check your vision and the health of your eyes.

How is performed

First, you will be asked by the eye doctor if you are having any eye problems. You will be asked to describe these problems, how long you have had them, and any factors that have made them better or worse.

If you wear, your history of glasses or contact lenses will also be reviewed. The eye doctor will then ask questions about your overall health, including any medications you take and your family's medical history so he’ll see if you may have a condition that’s triggering your vision problems.

Next, the doctor will check your visual acuity using a Snellen chart:

  • You will be asked to read random letters that become smaller line by line as your eyes move down the chart. Newer electronic devices have been developed that check vision in a way similar to a Snellen chart.
  • To see if you need glasses, the doctor will place several lenses in front of your eye, one at a time, and ask you when the letters on the Snellen chart become easier to see.

Other parts of the exam include tests to:

  • See if you have proper 3D vision (stereopsis)
  • Check your peripheral vision
  • Check the eye muscles by asking you to look in different directions at small object
  • Examine the pupils with a penlight to see if they respond properly to light

To see inside your eye, the doctor looks through an ophthalmoscope. The device allows the doctor to see the retina and nearby blood vessels, the back of the eye (fundus) and the optic nerve area.

Often, you'll be given eye drops to dilate your pupils so that the doctor can view better the structures in the back of the eye.

Another magnifying device called a slit lamp is used to:

  • See the clear surface of the eye (eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, sclera, and iris)
  • Check for glaucoma using a method called tonometry
  • Color blindness is tested using multicolored dots that form numbers.

How to Prepare for the Test

Make an appointment with an eye doctor (some take walk-in patients). Avoid eye strain on the day of the test. You may need someone to drive you home if the doctor uses eye drops to dilate your pupils. The tests cause no pain or discomfort.

All children should have vision screening in a pediatrician office around the time they learn the alphabet and then every 1 to 2 years. Screening should begin sooner if any eye problems are suspected. Between ages 20 and 39 a complete eye exam should be done every 5 to 10 years and adults who wear contact lenses often need early eye exams. Also, certain eye symptoms or disorders may require more frequent exams. Adults over age 40 who have no risk factors or ongoing eye conditions should be screened every 2 to 4 years (ages 40 - 54), every 1 to 3 years (ages 55 - 64) or every 1 to 2 years (age 65 and older)

Various eye and medical problems can be found by a routine eye test, including cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure or macular degeneration.

Results - what is normal and what not

Normal Results

  • 20/20 vision
  • Ability to identify different colors
  • Full visual field
  • Proper eye muscle coordination
  • Normal eye pressure
  • Normal eye structures (cornea, iris, lens, etc.)

Abnormal Results may be due to:

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Astigmatism
  • Blocked tear duct
  • Cataract or glaucoma
  • Color blindness
  • Corneal abrasion, ulcers and infections
  • Damaged nerves or blood vessels in the eye
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Hyperopia, myopia, presbyopia
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Strabismus
  • Trauma

If you received drops to dilate your eyes your vision will be blurred and the sunlight can damage your vision. So wear dark glasses or shade your eyes to avoid discomfort until the dilation wears off, usually in several hours. Because of this you won’t be able to drive for a couple of hours so you should not come alone at the eye doctor.

Laser Eye Surgery - Demystifying LASIK

LASIK - A now common procedure

One of the first things that springs to mind when considering corrective eye surgery is the term, "LASIK". An acronym for "laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis," this rather common procedure is used to correct certain vision problems through refractive surgery.

Since its debut in the 1980s, there have been conflicting stories about what LASIK entails and whether or not it's truly successful.

Laser eye surgery is typically used for those who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Until the advent of LASIK, eyeglasses and contacts were used to treat these issues, but only served as aids to vision rather than corrections.

Those who have undergone a successful laser eye surgery procedure should find that their need for such aids are extremely diminished or eliminated altogether.

Reshaping your eyes

Technically speaking, LASIK eye surgery reshapes the cornea from within the eye itself using laser to accomplish the task.

If, for instance, your cornea is not shaped correctly to fit the dimensions of your eye, this procedure may be effective. By utilizing laser to extract bits of tissue from the cornea in order to reshape it, the refractive error can be corrected and the visual images will then be focused directly onto the retina, which may eliminate the need for aids such as eyeglasses and contact lenses.

After a thorough eye examination, you'll be expected to choose a doctor to perform the LASIK eye surgery. Once this has been done, you'll be scheduled for a consultation with the doctor to discuss the process, and you'll have the opportunity to voice whatever questions or concerns that you may have prior to the procedure.

Don't wear your glasses for up to a month before the op'

You should expect to be instructed not to wear your glasses or contact lenses for two to four weeks prior to your surgery, in order for the cornea to return to its natural shape, without interference from external visual aids.

When an individual wears cheap contact lenses, for instance, the shape of the cornea is changed, so it's important to remove these and leave them out for up to a month before surgery.

In addition, your doctor will instruct you not to apply any lotions, creams, make-up or other products around the area of the eyes for awhile prior to the procedure.

On the day of your LASIK eye surgery, you'll receive anesthetic drops in each eye in order to eliminate pain. You'll then be placed on a table which is positioned underneath the laser equipment, and the doctor will instruct you to look up at a small blinking light.

During your laser surgery, a special instrument will be utilized to hold your eye open, allowing the doctor to perform the LASIK surgery, while the other eye is protected by a shield.

With a couple of hours you'll be on your way home

After making a small incision, the doctor will then expose the cornea, and apply the laser technology that's needed to reshape and repair the eye. Once accomplished, the flap that was cut open to expose the cornea will be put back into position and will heal on its own, without the need for stitches. An hour or two after the surgery is completed, you'll be allowed to go home.

Depending upon the individual, the amount of corrective treatment that was administered and the quickness of the healing process, what can be expected after surgery will vary from person to person.

Speak with your physician regarding recovery expectations before and after the surgery and follow any instructions that are given, in order to ensure a successful LASIK eye surgery experience.

Mike Spencer reviews reviews leading, and sometimes controversial, approaches to improving and protecting our health. Here he looks at the pros and cons of LASIK eye surgery and whether it can offer any real benefits to improved vision.

Lasik surgery

Thanks to Miami LASIK surgery, millions of people throughout the world are less dependent on glasses or contact lenses. Still, the decision to undergo LASIK should be approached with caution. Because LASIK is still considered a surgical technique, some serious potential risks — though rare — are associated with it.

Because LASIK is an elective procedure, you should always remember that you can opt for safer and still effective nonsurgical alternatives, such as wearing glasses and contact lenses.

When considering LASIK, do some homework and consult with your eye doctor to learn more about the procedure. Ask about potential LASIK complications as well as visual outcomes.

Inquire about the technology your LASIK surgeon uses for the procedure. In LASIK, an ultra-thin, hinged flap is lifted from the surface of your eye. After laser energy is applied to reshape the cornea, the flap is replaced to serve as a type of natural bandage.

Does your surgeon prefer a blade-created flap or a laser-created flap associated with the recent innovation of bladeless LASIK? You should also consider the newly developed eye-tracking technology in an excimer laser: it helps make inadvertent eye movement less of a problem during the eye surgery procedure. Also, “custom” or Wavefront-guided LASIK reduces the chance of nighttime visual side effects, such as glare and halos.

After you go through the education process to understand your best treatment options and the available technology, it is important to understand your surgeon's level of experience. After a balanced discussion about all these issues, you will be more prepared to make an informed decision, which will improve your chance of a good LASIK outcome.

LASIK Studies and Safety Standards

The eye care community sets high standards for LASIK technology. In order for a LASIK laser to receive FDA approval, manufacturers are expected to have adverse event rates of less than 1 percent during clinical trials.

The FDA definition of adverse event includes a list of specific problems such as corneal swelling, flap problems, uncontrolled intraocular pressure and detached retina syndrome.

At this time, no central database of LASIK outcomes exists. At an April 2010 public hearing, the FDA announced its intentions to clarify information about quality-of-life issues and details about what can go wrong in a LASIK procedure. The idea is to make more of these types of statistics available to the public.

Most of what is currently known about visual acuity outcomes after LASIK is based on various clinical studies, especially trials the FDA requires laser manufacturers to perform to obtain approval.

Most clinical studies of LASIK vision outcomes have a few elements in common. These include:

  • An assessment of how many people achieve 20/20 vision or better (so-called "perfect" vision) and how many achieve 20/40 vision or better (the minimum visual acuity required to obtain a driver's license in most states).
  • A discussion of how many people get to within one diopter or a half diopter of zero refractive error. (Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are all refractive errors. Zero refractive error is called emmetropia.)
  • Details about possible adverse events associated with LASIK.
To monitor vision changes during the LASIK recovery period, many studies measure visual outcomes immediately after surgery, several days later and at one, three and six months after the procedure.

Comparing FDA Data on LASIK Lasers

The FDA has approved lasers for use in LASIK to treat myopia and hyperopia, with or without astigmatism. Best results have statistically occurred in people with low to moderate myopia.

When considering FDA studies, however, it is impossible to compare study results head-to-head. This is because people who enrolled in one study may have had different characteristics than those who had LASIK in another study for another company's laser.

Results from the same laser can also vary, depending on how people were selected for the study. Some studies may eliminate those with more severe refractive errors, while others may need to assess results specifically for these types of vision problems.

Furthermore, the results of studies conducted in the last few years are probably better, as surgeons gained more experience and many of the laser technologies were improved. In short, FDA results serve best to provide a general perspective of trends, but not a definitive conclusion.

Just remember that, no matter what approved treatment is best, you and your surgeon can choose to do whatever you think is appropriate and reasonable in your particular case.

Best-Corrected Vision After LASIK

The target values that the eye care community have established for LASIK vision outcomes say a lot about what you can expect from the procedure. The most feared outcome of LASIK is a decrease in best possible vision, something doctors call best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) or sometimes best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA).

In other words, if you can be corrected to 20/20 with glasses or contact lenses before undergoing LASIK, you'd like to be corrected to at least 20/20 after LASIK.

For example, if you have 20/200 uncorrected vision before LASIK and see 20/20 with contact lenses or glasses, then see 20/40 uncorrected after LASIK but are correctable to only 20/25 with contacts or glasses, you have lost one line of BCVA (from 20/20 to 20/25) on a standard eye chart. But even though you lost one line of best corrected visual acuity, you gained more than six lines of uncorrected vision (from 20/200 to 20/40).

The FDA expects laser manufacturers to show that no more than 5 percent of patients in clinical trials lose more than two lines of BCVA and that less than 1 percent of patients have BCVA worse than 20/40.

What is holistic eyesight improvement

Natural eyesight improvement is a holistic approach to vision care. It is a whole person approach to preventing and reversing functional eyesight distortions. The factors that affect vision can come in many forms. They are related to occupation, emotional blocks, nutrition and the habitually stressful ways in which we use our eyes every day. Vision occurs mainly in the brain. Our eyes receive information in the form of light, and the brain processes the information to make meaning of it, creating our "visual world". Many people begin Natural eyesight improvement to see more clearly and some of them mention that having a “side effects’ such as become more relaxed and creative. Much to consider about mind focusing exercise contribute to this effect and I guess that was not a bad effect right? : )

The work is rooted in The Bates Method, developed by Dr W. H. Bates in the 1920s, which received continuous improvement and development by eyesight improvement educator and basically such programme to help with:

1. Nearsightedness (myopia)
2. Farsightedness (hyperopia or hypermetropia)
3. Presbyopia ('middle-age sight')
4. Astigmatism
5. Eye fatigue and discomfort
6. Discomfort in bright light (photosensitivity and photophobia)
7. Vision related headaches
8. Computer eye strain (CSS)
9. Eye teaming difficulties, strabismus and amblyopia
10. Eye Diseases (for people with cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration etc, who are under the care of an ophthalmologist.)

Benefits from practising natural eyesight improvement can include:

1 Increased clarity of sight in the distance
2· Increased ability to see clearly close-up
3· Increased speed of focus
4· Healthier eyes
5· Greater ease and comfort in and around your eyes
6· Less computer eye strain
7· Reduced dependence on glasses
8· Enhanced depth perception
9· Faster adaptation to bright light and to the dark
10· A more relaxed way of being
11· Greater connection with yourself and the world around you
12· Better balance and coordination

The techniques applied in any natural eyesight improvement have been successfully improving people’s eyesight since this work was pioneered in the 1920′s by ophthalmologist Dr. William Bates. The refraction eye test

The refraction test is an eye exam that measures a person's prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

How the test is performed

This test is performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Both of these professionals are often called "the eye doctor."
You are asked to sit in a chair that has a special device (called a phoroptor or refractor) attached to it. You then look straight through that device and focus on an eye chart which is 20 feet away. The refractor contains lenses of different strengths that can be placed between you and the eye chart. This test is performed one eye at a time.
The eye doctor performing the test will ask if the chart appears more or less clear when different lenses are in place.

How to prepare for the test

If you wear contact lenses, ask the eye doctor if you need to remove them before the test and for how long do you need to keep them out.

How taking this test will feel like

You will experience absolutely no discomfort during this test, so you don’t need to worry about feeling any type of pain.

Why the test is performed

The refraction test can be done as part of a routine eye exam. The purpose of this test is to determine whether you suffer from any type of refractive error (that might require you to wear glasses or contact lenses).
If you are over the age of 40 and have normal distance vision, but you experience difficulty with near vision, a refraction test can determine the right diopter for reading glasses.

Normal results

If your vision (without glasses or contact lenses) is normal, then the refractive error is zero and this means that your vision should be 20/20.
20/20 is the numerical value for a perfect vision and this means that you are able to read 3/8-inch letters from a distance of 20 feet. A smaller sized font is also used to determine normal near vision.

What if the results are not normal?

You might suffer from a refractive error if you need a combination of lenses or glasses to achieve 20/20 vision. However, glasses or contact lenses should give you good vision.
The overall score you achieve during the refraction test is called the visual acuity test.
Abnormal results may indicate that you have either:

  • Astigmatism
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Presbyopia (inability to focus on near objects; this particular condition develops with age)

Risks

There are no risks involved in taking this test.

Recommendations

You should undergo a complete eye examination every 3 - 5 years even if you don’t suffer from any eye conditions, just to be sure that you still don’t have any problems. But if your vision becomes blurry, worsens, or if there are other noticeable changes, schedule an eye examination immediately.
After the age of 40 (or if you have a family history of glaucoma), eye examinations should be scheduled at least once a year to test for glaucoma. Anyone with diabetes should also undergo an eye exam at least once a year.

People who suffer from any refractive errors should have an eye examination every 1-2 years, or whenever their vision changes. Also, it’s always good to know that besides contact lenses, another option is Miami refractive surgery, especially if you don’t want to be bothered with wearing glasses.

Summer beauty tips

Summer’s here and these are the latest beauty tips for this season. And since summer is a time for change, this summer is all about having the courage to wear bright colours with confidence!

So, what’s in this year?

A beautiful tan

On a lovely summer's day there is nothing better than the appearance of a healthy glow to make you feel better and one of the easiest ways to achieve this is with bronzing powder. You shouldn’t be afraid that you'll choose the wrong shade of bronzer, because there is a range of shades that have been specifically created to suit every skin tone.

If you don't like using fake tans and bronzing powders, the easiest way to achieve a healthy natural glow is with blush. Whether your blush is an ultra-fine powder or a light cream, the rules are the same. Apply it along your cheekbones or the apples of your cheeks, depending on your face shape. Remember to build up the colour gradually until you get the soft natural glow that you're looking for.

If you prefer natural tan, make the most of your newly-acquired bronze by using a glow highlighter on your cheekbones and forehead. It’s subtle and it looks amazing on tanned skin and you can even use it in the daytime to help keep your holiday glow when you return to work. For a touch of instant evening glamour apply the glow highlighter to your shoulders and decolletage. This is a look that holds up well in humidity, heat, sun, and all-night dancing. To keep it fresh, modern, and in season, skip the heavy foundation, powder, and lipstick. For a lighter look switch to a tinted moisturizer, apply it with a damp sponge and you'll be sure to get an even look. A little concealer dabbed under the eye will give added radiance.

During summer, a very important thing is to protect your skin! If you are going to be spending many hours in the sun, whether in the garden or on the beach, make sure you invest in a bottle of sun tan lotion, a floppy sun hat and a pair of sun glasses. These recommendations come straight from the eye doctor, to help protect your skin and your sensitive eyes from potential sun damage.

Luscious lips

A vibrant fruit-punch pout is a shockingly simple way to stand out from the crowd. Just remember this cardinal rule of cosmetics - when you decide to wear a bright color on your lips, be sure to tone everything else down. Red lips are a big hit this season too!

And if cherry red it's a bit too bold for you, tone it down and opt instead for its more subdued shade like coral or orange.

Eye catching colours

A gorgeous gilded gaze very well may be the easiest way to draw attention to your eyes without being obvious. Enveloping your lids in a soft golden hue makes your eyes pop in an easy and breezy way.

Contrary to popular belief, turquoise happens to be one of the most versatile shades on the shelves. Liberally dust this hue across your eyelids or lightly line your lower rim. Make it subtle and smoky, or go dark and dynamic — either way, you've got a bevy of stunning options available to you.

Also, the metallic liner is versatile and flattering on a wide variety of skin tones. Plus, there's nothing sexier than when the sun hits your face just right and your eyes flare up with an unexpected glint. Talk about eye-catching!

Another big hit this summer is the ivory liner. Late summer nights, sun, ocean water, and chlorine can leave your eyes looking red and tired. To combat this, using a beige or white eyeliner on the lower inner rim of the eye can give the illusion of bigger, brighter eyes. It's very subtle, but makes a visible difference for just enough nighttime wow.

Remember, now is the absolute best season to break out your craziest colour palette: bright, bold, electric, neon. Pink and golden-yellow colours is an amazing combination that will open up your eyes. Make smoky eyes with brown and burgundy colour. The earth tones will help you to highlight the colour of your eyes, whether they are brown, green or blue.

Purple makeup is an absolute hit this season, and besides, it is known that the violet shades suit all eye colors. These are two strong enough reasons to try a seductive smoky eyes look with purple and black colours.

Yellow, orange, blue and pink eye shadows were among the most popular eye shadows used by the make up artists in the fashion shows for season spring / summer 2021. Do not say that yellow make up do not suit your eyes before you test whether that is true or not.

Do not be afraid to try a fresh summer makeup with strong pink and beige eyeshadow.

Also, try glamorous smokey eyes look with royal blue eyeshadow. If you have a darker skin complexion, you should definitely try turquoise eye make up.

For a lighter, more summery appearance, swap your black mascara for one that is either brown-black or brown. To complete your look, remember to have your eyebrows professionally shaped. But watch out, there is nothing worse than running mascara, so if you're planning a beach holiday, consider your choice of mascara with care. Waterproof mascara is great, but you'll probably need an oil-based eye make-up remover to take it off properly, so that you don't get an unsightly build-up.

Coloured nails

This season, pastel nail color look darling and dreamy, and flirty and feminine. Between mint, cornflower, lilac, rose, peach, and daffodil, there’s a plenty of pretty pastel polish picks that are just as girlish as they are sophisticated.

Another hit this summer are flamboyant neon colours paired amazing with an all-white outfit for making a statement.
